Google's Panda Refresh Causes Search Fluctuations
Google dropped a bomb on the world of SEO in February 2011 with its original Panda update that targeted low-quality content on websites (here's a good Q&A with members of Google's search team for more information).
Earlier this month, around June 4-5, Google refreshed the update, causing some pretty serious fluctuations in search engine ranking pages (SERPs). Dr. Pete at SEOMoz put together an excellent article talking about tracking the refresh/update and identifying some of what it did. Google later confirmed a Panda refresh. As if the previous Penguin update wasn't enough, continued Panda refreshes can throw SEO professionals for a curve – yet another reason it's important to stay on top of the cutting edge in SEO best practices!
